The float‑equipped, amphibious variant of the M‑8 EAGLE represents a significant expansion of Orličan’s aircraft portfolio. On 19 May, the aircraft settled on the surface of the Vltava River for the first time and subsequently took off above the Hněvkovice reservoir. The successful test confirmed both the technical readiness of the design and the aircraft’s ability to operate in environments that place specific demands on light sport aircraft.
Technical and Operational Characteristics of the Water Variant
The hydroplane is based on the two‑seat, high‑wing M‑8 EAGLE with a maximum take‑off weight of 600 kg. The airframe has been equipped with floats that fundamentally change both the aircraft’s operational profile and its visual appearance. At the same time, it is an amphibious version, capable of operating both from water surfaces and conventional runways.
The float configuration was engineered to maintain the stability, controllability, and performance parameters of the standard model while enabling safe operations on water. The test flight required precise planning — permission to operate on the river was limited to a single day per week and had to align with favourable weather conditions.
Development Process and Testing
Development of the base M‑8 EAGLE model took six years. The float‑equipped variant emerged as a natural extension of a programme that has gradually established itself in both European and American markets. Water‑based testing focused on safety, stability during the take‑off run, behaviour during the transition from water to flight, and landing characteristics.
The test team had to work within narrow time windows, which placed high demands on coordination. Despite these constraints, all planned milestones were achieved, confirming that the design is ready for serial production.
Strategic Focus on the U.S. Market
The float‑equipped version of the M‑8 EAGLE is intended exclusively for the United States, where water‑based flying has a long tradition and where demand for light sport hydroplanes remains strong. Orličan will deliver two aircraft this year, both already assigned to specific customers.
The U.S. market is strategically important for Orličan. The float‑equipped variant expands the offering into a segment that is not only popular but also commercially attractive. The robust construction of the M‑8 EAGLE, its generous cabin space, and its versatility make the water‑capable version a compelling option for recreational pilots as well as operators in regions with extensive lake systems.
Importance of the Hydroplane for the Future of the M‑8 EAGLE Programme
Introducing the float‑equipped version strengthens Orličan’s position within the light sport aircraft category. The water variant expands the operational possibilities of the base model, increases the attractiveness of the offering for U.S. customers, supports the company’s export strategy, and brings new technical experience applicable to future projects.
The hydroplane is therefore not merely an add‑on, but a fully integrated part of a broader development programme with ambitions to grow both within Europe and beyond.
The first water take‑off of the float‑equipped M‑8 EAGLE marks an important milestone in Orličan’s history. The successful tests demonstrate the technical maturity of the design and open the path to export into the United States, where this type of aircraft has strong potential. The hydroplane expands the capabilities of the M‑8 EAGLE programme and reinforces the company’s strategic position in the international light sport aircraft market.
